Pursue a career as a Veterinary Technician with a degree in Veterinary Technology

Certified Veterinary Technicians are credentialed professionals who provide nursing care to animals in need, whether sick or healthy, under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian. 

Technicians are trained in a variety of disciplines, including nursing procedures, animal behavior, surgical assisting, diagnostic procedures and preventative care.  NSCC’s two-year Veterinary Technology Associate of Applied Science Degree Program trains you to work in a clinical veterinary setting with an emphasis on the health and care of dogs and cats. 

Graduates of the program are employed in veterinary clinics and hospitals as well as being qualified for positions in research facilities.  Program coursework prepares you to successfully complete the National Veterinary Technician Certification Exam (VTNE). 

NSCC abides by standards put forth by the College’s Institution Animal Care and Use Committee.

As a student in NSCC’s Veterinary Technology degree program, you will learn to:

  • Demonstrate professionalism through personal conduct, autonomy, and collaborative teamwork consistent with the standards of the Veterinary Profession.
  • Provide nursing care to a variety of animal species, including husbandry, nutrition, preventative care and animal behavior.
  • Demonstrate understanding and proficiency of the pharmacologic aspects of medications.
  • Demonstrate and perform patient assessment techniques in a variety of animal species and under various circumstances.

Consistent with the standards published by the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Program faculty balance theory, practical application and self-assessment in the teaching of the clinical and administrative competencies. Veterinary Technology knowledge and technical skills are acquired through a wide range of learning activities. Additionally, critical thinking and problem solving are advanced through the learning experience. The Program has as its primary goal the development of entry-level veterinary technicians prepared to render competent care (in an ethical manner) to their patients.

The Veterinary Technology Program at North Shore Community College is fully accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association as a program for educating veterinary technicians.
