Step 1: Attend a Mandatory Information Session

Before applying, all students must attend an Information Session to learn about the program, admission requirements, curriculum, and the application process.

Location: Virtual (Zoom).
Duration: Approximately 1 hour.
Attendance: Arrive on time! Late arrivals (10+ minutes) will not be admitted and must attend a future session. Attendance will be recorded to satisfy this requirement.

Step 2: Complete the Online Application

Submit the Selective Admissions Application for the year you are applying (previous applications do not count).

  • Other supporting materials (see below)

Step 3: Write & Submit Your Essay

Upload your word-processed essay with your application. The essay should be typed and must answer all questions.

  1. Describe how your life/work experiences have contributed to you choosing to become a veterinary technician. Describe the most interesting thing you observed during your Veterinary Technician observation hours.
  2. How do you plan to manage your academic commitments and your other life commitments while enrolled in this rigorous program?
  3. As a member of the healthcare team, what is the role of a Veterinary Technician?
  4. Describe a challenging personal or work situation. How did you manage the situation?
  5. What did you learn from the situation?
  6. Discuss your prior experiences with math and science courses. Which were your favorites and why?

Step 4: Submit Transcripts

All official transcripts from previous colleges/universities must be sent directly to NSCC. If you’ve already submitted transcripts, you must send updated ones if you’ve completed additional coursework.

Step 5: Demonstrate Proficiency

Upload documentation to your application. Communications & Mathematics Proficiency can be demonstrated in multiple ways:

  • SAT scores
  • Accuplacer tests
  • High school GPA
  • College coursework

Step 6: Submit High School Transcript or GED

Upload your high school transcript or GED score report. If you submitted this within the last 5 years, confirm with SelectiveAdmissions@northshore.edu.


Additional Requirements

  • Submit a resume highlighting your academic, extracurricular, volunteer, and work history.

  • Submit ONE letter of recommendation. This may be an academic or professional letter of recommendation, but cannot be from a family member.

  • Submit proof of a minimum total of twenty (20) hours either working, volunteering, or observing at an applicable animal care facility. The form will be provided with the application.

Biology and Chemistry Requirements

Applications for the Veterinary Technology program for Fall 2025 is now closed. Candidates applying for admission to the Veterinary Technology program will be required to have an introductory level course in chemistry (equivalent to NSCC CHEM 101) AND biology (equivalent to NSCC BIO 101) both with a C or better completed prior to entry into the program

  • On-line courses for both chemistry and biology courses may be used to meet the prerequisites.  Both courses must have a laboratory component. 
  • The biology course must be for science or health science majors.
  • A high school class will meet this requirement as long as the applicant earned a final grade of "C" or better and the student:
    • took the class while in high school
    • completed the class within 5 years of application
    • graduated high school within 5 years of application
    • the class had a laboratory component
  • Students may be enrolled in the prerequisite course at the time of application, but admission remains conditional until a final grade of C or better is submitted no later than June 30th, prior to the Fall start.

Math Requirement

Applicants must demonstrate math proficiency and that they meet the NSCC Non-STEM Math Level 3 prerequisite. Non-stem math level 3 will be required for MAT 134. For detailed information regarding this requirement, please see this Math Prerequisites link: Math Prerequisites .This lists the requirements for Non-STEM Math level 3. Students may be enrolled in the prerequisite course at the time of application, but admission remains conditional until a the final grade of C or better is submitted no later than June 30th, prior to the Fall start. On-line courses are accepted.
