Program Overview

ACCESS is a full-inclusion, non-degree seeking enrollment opportunity that supports students with intellectual and developmental disabilities who want to go to college. Students in the ACCESS program can improve their academic, social, and career outcomes by fully participating in college experiences within the larger campus community. ACCESS is a MAIPSE* program. 


ACCESS Program Eligibility

  • Students age 18-22 who: (A) have a severe intellectual disability, autism, or other developmental disability, and (B) are enrolled and receiving special education services through an ACCESS partner school district.

  • Students over the age of 22 who: (A) have a severe intellectual disability, autism, or other developmental disability, (B) were not able to receive a high school diploma/equivalency, and (C) are receiving services from DDS, MassAbility, or other state agencies.

ACCESS Program Benefits 

  • Person-centered planning for specialized enrollment, registration, and advising 
  • Enrollment to audit one college course per fall and spring semester (credit or non-credit) that supports students' individualized personal, academic, social, and career goals
  • Individualized support utilizing educational coaches to support student coursework and campus engagement 
  • Full access to NSCC clubs, student activities, resources, and supports
  • Participate in skill-building groups and workshops
  • Peer connections and mentoring from fellow NSCC students 
  • Ongoing program coordination to ensure progress towards goals, problem-solving support, and connection with needed resources 
  • On-campus or community-based internship opportunities/career support
  • Independent scheduling, travel, and transportation planning

If you are interested in the ACCESS Program, begin by contacting Eleanor Richard, the ACCESS program manager, at erichard@northshore.edu to discuss eligibility, school/agency partnerships, and program fit. Eligible applicants will be invited to apply and engage in person-centered planning meetings. Enrollment in the ACCESS program is limited in order to maintain personalized support.
