Accuplacer Placement Testing

ACCUPLACER testing is available during our open hours remotely via Zoom and on campus in Lynn and Danvers. No appointment is required. Please note that the last test start time is one hour before closing. The full set of placement tests typically takes 2–3 hours to complete.

Tests are divided into two parts:

- Reading/Writing Communications or English as a Second Language (ESL) Communications
- Math Communications

All students must present a photo ID to test.
All students must have an NSCC ID number in order to take the test.

Monday and Friday: 9 AM – 5 PM
Tuesday–Thursday: 11 AM – 7 PM

On-Campus

Monday and Friday: 9 AM – 5 PM
Tuesday–Thursday: 9 AM – 7 PM

Lynn (LS-215) or Danvers (DB-213)

Important Notes

  • Last testing: 1 hour before closing
  • Nursing students: must arrive 1.5 hours before closing
  • First Monday each month: closes at 4 PM
  • Last testing: 3 PM (2:30 PM for nursing)
  • First Saturday each month: 9 AM – 1 PM (Zoom + Lynn only)
  • Closed on legal holidays

About the Tests

Test sessions completed via Zoom are subject to local review. NSCC reserves the right to invalidate scores based on this review and may require students to retest on campus. Please note that your test session will be recorded.

  • Reading Comprehension: 20 multiple-choice questions; not timed.

  • Writing: A five-paragraph essay; timed for 1 hour.

  • Reading Comprehension: 20 multiple choice questions; not timed.

  • ESL Listening: 20 multiple choice listening questions.

  • Writing: An essay in response to a prompt.

  • Arithmetic: 20 multiple-choice questions covering fractions, decimals, and percents; not timed.

  • Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics (QAS): 20 questions; used to place students into courses from Foundations of Math through Statistics; not timed.

*STEM students must take ALEKS in person on either campus.

  • ACCUPLACER math scores are valid for three years. Students with scores older than three years must retest or use another placement method.

  • Students may take each ACCUPLACER math test up to two times within a 12-month period. A minimum of one week is required between attempts.

  • ACCUPLACER is used only for determining your initial math course. Once enrolled in a math course, students must follow the sequential math pathway for their non-STEM program.

You must have an NSCC ID number in order to test.   

  1. If you have not applied to NSCC, please email admissions@northshore.edu to seek application instructions

  2. If you have applied as a New Student, please sign up for a New Student Completion Event. You will be contacted by Student Support and Advising to determine your course placement and if you need placement testing.

  3. If you are a Visiting Student and need to take a Placement Test in order to take a course, please email advising@northshore.edu. Please type "Visiting Student" in the subject line and list the course you would like to take. You will be contacted by an advisor to determine which test or means of demonstrating proficiency is right for you.
