ALEKS Math Placement Testing

Students in the STEM programs listed below—or any student wishing to take Precalculus who does not meet the course prerequisites—must complete the ALEKS Math Placement.


Testing Hours and Locations

ALEKS must be taken on campus in Lynn (LS-215) or Danvers (DB-213).

Hours

Monday and Friday: 9 AM – 5 PM
Tuesday–Thursday: 9 AM – 7 PM

Lynn Campus: LS-215
Danvers Campus: DB-213

Important Notes

  • No appointment is required. Simply stop in during our open hours.
  • All students must present a photo ID.
  • The test has 25 questions and it is not timed.

About the Test

Test sessions completed via Zoom are subject to local review. NSCC reserves the right to invalidate scores based on this review and may require students to retest on campus. Please note that your test session will be recorded.

ALEKS is both a test and a personalized learning program.After completing your first test:

  • You may log in to ALEKS to work on individualized learning modules.

  • After one week and 8 hours of work in the learning modules, you become eligible to retake the test.

  • Students may take the proctored ALEKS test up to two times.

ALEKS scores are valid for three years. Students with scores older than three years must retest or use another placement method.

To explore ALEKS before taking the official placement:

  1. Visit the ALEKS website and click Free Trial (upper right).

  2. Under Independent Use, click Continue.

  3. Under Explore Student Module, click Try ALEKS Now.

  4. Review the Terms of Use, check the agreement box, and click Continue.

  5. Complete the short form with your name and personal email (not your school email).

    • Choose College or K–12 Student

    • Select Higher Ed | Math

    • Choose Beginning and Intermediate Algebra Combined

  6. ALEKS will create a Guest Account with a username and password. Save this information if you want to return for more practice.-

  7. Continue to the free trial and complete the brief Tools Tutorial.

Students may take ALEKS two times within a 12-month period.

A minimum of one week and 8 hours of preparation in ALEKS learning modules is required between attempts. For instructions on how to use the learning modules, watch the Navigating Aleks Learning Modules Video.

ALEKS placement is used only for determining your initial math course. Once enrolled in a math course, students must follow the sequential math pathway required for their STEM program.
