Free short-term career training in Healthcare and IT
North Shore Community College offers free training for careers that are in high-demand on the North Shore. Students who successfully complete courses will have greater access to job opportunities with employers who are actively looking to hire trained employees.

All classes are free thanks to grant funds provided by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Enrollment process and requirements may vary by course.

Professional Role
A Community Health Worker (CHW) ensures the health and well-being of multi-cultural residents in a variety of community-based settings such as homes, schools, clinics, shelters, local businesses, and community centers. This training program has been developed to align with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s recommended ten core competencies for CHW’s.
Course Content
CHW students will be training to carry out one or more of the following roles:

Providing culturally appropriate health education, information and outreach in community-based settings, such as homes, schools, clinics, shelters, local businesses and community centers

Bridging and/or culturally mediating between individuals, communities and health and human services, including actively building individual and community capacity

Assisting people to access the services they need
-
Providing direct services, such as informal counseling, social support, care coordination and health screenings
-
Advocating for individual and community needs

Unemployed or underemployed or belong to an underrepresented population

Must submit Next Generation (Accuplacer) scores or transcript from college-level course for review

COVID vaccination (booster may be required)

Professional Role
Nurse Assistant/Home Health Aides provide direct care to patients in hospitals, and residents of long term care facilities and private homes. They work under the direction of nurses and doctors, providing direct care and assistance to patients such as bathing, feeding, dressing, and transferring from bed to chair.

Professional Role
Recovery Coaches are individuals currently in recovery from addiction and/or co-occurring mental health disorders and have been trained to help their peers with a similar experience gain hope, explore recovery, and achieve life goals. Recovery coaches provide others with support in making positive life changes and in developing skills to facilitate their recovery.

Professional Role
An IT Technical Support Specialist may assist colleagues and/or customers with issues related to both computer hardware and software. Challenges for the Specialist to address may range from security compliance considerations to upgrading, repairing, optimizing performance and performing preventative maintenance.
