Being Mindful of Religious Holidays and Observances

Dear NSCC Community:

While we continue working towards co-creating inclusive practices, processes, and policies at the College, we want to continue sharing resources that may be helpful this semester as many in our community spend time celebrating and observing across many religions. Currently, students are not automatically excused from class for religious observances; however, they may ask professors to work with them to make accommodations. Similarly, employees are not automatically excused from religious observances outside of the holidays identified per the respective collective bargaining agreements. Nonetheless, employees who observe religious holidays are encouraged to discuss with their managers in advance about celebrating or observing should it impact any work or schedule, particularly to explore how we can best support our NSCC community members’ faiths.

Based on the feedback received since this practice began, we’d like to now share ways that would automatically add religious holidays and observances to your NSCC Google Calendar:

  1. From your northshore.edu Google Calendar page, look for Other calendars on the left-hand side.

  2. Click the + next to it, then select Browse calendars of interest.

  3. From there, you will see Global religious holidays, which you can check and select the following to auto-populate on your northshore.edu Google Calendar.

religious observances

If interested in previous resource iterations, you can find a list from Diversity Resources’ Interfaith Calendar 2024, which may be a helpful resource for the Spring 2024 semester. Additionally, you can also have these automatically reflected in your northshore.edu Google Calendar by clicking here to subscribe to the NSCC DEI Calendar (in development).

Please contact Dan Hauge (dhauge@northshore.edu) if you have any questions or require further support.

mental hearlth first aid letters
Join us for Mental Health First Aid Training!

Mental Health First Aid is being offered to NSCC faculty, staff, and students. It is designed to help address the Mental Health concerns of our students and our colleagues. It is our goal that each of you view MHFA similar to that of CPR - you won’t be a doctor when you finish the training, but you could help someone who is having a mental health challenge.

The training focuses on helping participants recognize someone who is having a mental health challenge, how to approach them (if you choose to), how to engage in reflective listening, and how to assist the individual to connect with appropriate services within the community. A major focus of this training is also speaking about the need for self-care, as each of us encounters stressors in our day-to-day life. The National Council for Mental Wellbeing provides the certification upon completion of the training.

Please note that this is on a first come-first served basis. The training is open for up to 24 participants per session.

Deadline for this selected training: Wednesday, January 17th

Friday, January 26th from 9:00am - 5:00pm

Lynn Campus: LS 312

Deadline for this selected training: Monday, January 29th

On October 27, 2018, an armed American white nationalist killed 11 worshippers at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, PA. The tragic killings carried out at Tree of Life were reported on by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and North Shore native, David Shribman.

In his keynote address, David Shribman will discuss his experience covering this tragedy and how reflecting upon it might lead to hope, healing, and combating antisemitism.

This Forum is dedicated to the memory of longtime Forum on Tolerance Committee Member, educator, and mentor to David Shribman, Harvey Michaels.

With COVID cases on the rise, we think it is important to send out a refresher on what to do when you test positive for COVID-19 or come in close contact with someone who tested positive.  We want to assure the community that we are
staying up to date with any guidelines and guidance from the CDC and the MA Department of Public Health.  This guidance, including what to do if you are in close contact with someone who tested positive, can be found here: COVID-19 GUIDELINES

Any Faculty/Staff member who tests positive should contact Jennifer Chavez, HR Operations & Benefits Manager, at jchavez@northshore.edu or hr@northshore.edu. If a student tests positive, they should be directed to studentcovid@northshore.edu.
