Enhancing Academic Pathways for Military Veterans through CPL
Please consider joining the upcoming PLA-HEIF virtual event: Enhancing Academic Pathways for Military Veterans through CPL on Friday, June 23, 2023/9am-12pm via Zoom. Sponsored by the Massachusetts Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) Council - HEIF 2023.
This event seeks to promote inclusive and socially just opportunities through the recognition of veterans' assets. Our goal is to ensure success for all military students pursuing degree completion at two-and four-year universities.
The American Council on Education (ACE) will be our featured presenter on navigating pathways to college for veterans. ACE provides many resources and services, including the ACE Military Guide and Joint Services Transcript (JST) that provide college credit recommendations for military education and training.
We welcome Veterans Services, VA Education Representatives, Deans, Chairs, Coordinators, Faculty, Registrars and Enrollment Staff, Admissions, and Advising at our 2- and 4-year institutions.
For more information and to register, click on the Agenda, which will begin with an overview of PLA in MA from Dr. Cristy Sugarman, Executive Director of CAS and PLA Council Chair.
June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month in honor of the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan, an important tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. Initially, the last Sunday in June was celebrated as "Gay Pride Day," but the actual day was flexible. In major cities across the nation the "day" soon grew to encompass a month-long series of events. Today, Pride Month celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia, and concerts, attracting millions of participants around the world. Memorials are held during this month for those members of the community who have been lost to hate crimes or to HIV/AIDS. The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals have had on history–locally, nationally, and internationally.
In 1994, a coalition of education-based organizations in the United States designated October as LGBT History Month. In 1995, a resolution passed by the General Assembly of the National Education Association included LGBT History Month within a list of commemorative months. National Coming Out Day (October 11), as well as the first "March on Washington" in 1979, are commemorated in the LGBTQ community during LGBT History Month.
As always, I welcome and invite the NSCC community to participate in this year's PRIDE celebrations through the numerous and various events happening across the North Shore supporting local LGBTQ organizations, and continuing our own self-work and lifelong learning in supporting LGBTQ communities:
Celebration and Community
To kick off Pride Month, on June 1, 2023, the North Shore Community College Police Department, the Danvers Police Department, and the Lynn Police Department will all be raising the Pride Flag.

-

-
Boston Spirit Magazine is a free, local magazine that features articles focusing on LGBT leaders from the worlds of business, politics, and entertainment.
Self-Work

Ever ask yourself why people are introducing themselves with pronouns or why they are in some people’s email signatures? NSCC has a template with our logo and pronouns for adding into your gmail signature on Marketing’s download page.
-
Learn more about pronouns and the impact of respecting individuals’ pronouns at pronouns.org.
-
Don’t forget intersectional themes, The Trevor Project has published amazing research regarding LGBTQ youth of many different identities, including this recent research brief on Middle Eastern and Northern African (MENA) LGBTQ Young People and this guide for Supporting LGBTQ Young People with Disabilities.
-
There’s been a drastic increase in laws targeting transgender individuals across the county. Check out translegislation.com to track where the laws are being passed and what they say.
