The following information provides guidelines for employers/supervisors who are planning to host an NSCC student for the fall, winter/spring or summer semester.
FAIR LABOR LAWS OF 1938 HIRING UNPAID INTERNS

The internship must be similar to training that would be given in an educational environment

The internship must be for the benefit of the intern

The intern does not displace regular employees

The employer derives no immediate advantage from the intern

The intern is not entitled to a job at the end of the internship

The intern understands that he or she is not entitled to wages
HOSTING A COOPERATIVE EDUCATION/INTERNSHIP STUDENT

The employer should provide a detailed position description
-
The employer should be committed to working with a representative from North Shore Community College (NSCC)
-
The organizational culture should support students
GOALS OF THE COOPERATIVE EDUCATION/INTERNSHIP PLACEMENT

The employer should provide meaningful work for student over the course of the semester. Students usually work between 12 and 15 hours per week for a total of 120 hours.
EXPECTATIONS OF HUMAN RESOURCES

The employer should provide the student s supervisor with sufficient/efficient supervisory skills to work with and mentor the student

The employer should provide the student s supervisor with sufficient time to organize and oversee the student s work

The employer should work with the student to uphold standards of Business Professionalism (e.g., attendance, professional appearance/attire, interaction with others)
EXPECTATIONS OF PHYSICAL RESOURCES

A safe, adequate workspace

Access to computers/needed technology (e.g., Internet, necessary software, telephone/fax)

Adequate reference resources

Parking or availability to public transportation

Interaction with others (e.g., employees/colleagues; clients, if applicable)

Handicapped accessibility should be noted
FINANCIAL RESOURCES

The employer may offer a hourly wage/salary/stipend

In lieu of compensation, the employer may offer other remuneration (e.g., parking or travel allowance)
DURING EMPLOYMENT PERIOD / AT COMPLETION OF EMPLOYMENT PERIOD

During the employment period, the supervisor should be available for discussion with an NSCC representative

During the employment period, the supervisor should be available for a mid-semester on-site visit

At the completion of 120 hours of work, the supervisor should be willing to provide the student with a letter of recommendation if applicable

At the completion of 120 hours of work, the supervisor should complete the post-internship evaluation
