A whirlwind of a week!

Last week the Board of Higher Education passed our new five-year Strategic Plan, then we were notified that we had received a $1 million dollar grant from the state to further build out our Bertolon Health Care Center of Excellence. We also received funding from the Shannon Grant which will allow us to continue our role in efforts to reduce gang involvement and violence in Lynn, and finally, we joined our colleagues from Quincy College in signing a new transfer agreement that will allow NSCC grads to seamlessly transfer to receive a bachelor's degree without losing credits and with scholarship assistance. We LOVE weeks like this!

NCBI: Creating a Climate Where All Are Welcome!

The National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI) is alive, well, and very active here at North Shore Community College. We are building on our 27-year history here at the College with a new partnership with Salem State University (SSU) and their NCBI team.  NSCC and SSU are teaming up to host a diversity/equity/inclusion/belonging workshop to the new employees at both institutions in early January. Our NSCC NCBI team has been preparing for this as well as many other initiatives. Over the next year, we hope to offer NCBI exposure workshops to the new leadership team at the College. We also are planning to host a Summer Retreat in early summer where team members will have new professional development opportunities, team building exercises, and culture sharing.

In late summer, plans are in the works to bring NSCC together with Cape Cod Community College and Salem State University to provide a Train the Trainer 3-day workshop where new NCBI trainers will learn the principles and practices of NCBI in order to facilitate upcoming trainings themselves. In addition to all of these efforts, our NCBI team continues to meet monthly and offer mini-workshops in the classroom. So far this semester we’ve offered workshops in PSY 110, HUS 100, and First Year Experience courses.

If you have an interest in learning about how to join our team of NCBI facilitators, please contact either of the co-chairs of NCBI, Nikki Pelonia(npelonia@northshore.edu) or Dave Houle (dhoule@northshore.edu).

For information about NCBI, click here  or go to www.ncbi.org.  There is also a form available for requesting workshops.  Join us in creating a climate where all are welcome!

FREE Math Success Lab Program

The STEM Starter Academy grant at NSCC will be funding a free Math Success Lab program for NSCC students this January. The program is open to all NSCC students. Please help spread the word to students who could benefit! You can access the printable flyer here.

The Math Success Lab is for students who want to improve their math skills in preparation for upcoming classes at NSCC. This course is taught by a math professor and will meet for 5 classes -  2 hours each class. The purpose of this refresher course is to give students the necessary study skills to be successful NSCC students.  Students will learn note taking skills, number sense and efficient methods of problem solving.

There is no financial cost to students attending math success lab.  Students of any math level can take this course. Students are expected to participate in all classes. The class will meet in Lynn campus from 10 am to 12 pm on January 3, 5, 10, 12, 17. Sign up here

Questions can be sent to Ali Tateosian, NSCC STEM Coordinator, at atateosi@northshore.edu

Stop by to wish Joanne Sullivan well!

joanne sullivan with flowers in greenhouseColleagues -- Joanne Sullivan is retiring! Having joined NSCC in 2010, Joanne has spent the last 12 years shepherding projects (state, federal and private) and herding cats (us) with her inimitable style.  North Shore has been the fortunate recipient of her many successful grant submissions – most notably our recent Title III grant -- and we are lucky to have had her.  Though she declined to be the star of a rowdy send-off party, Joanne is in her office (DB 322) Monday through Wednesday.  Please take some time between now and December 21st to stop in and wish Joanne well as she begins this next chapter of her life!

Arts in April: Call for Faculty, Staff, and Student Participation

The Arts in April committee is now planning the month-long arts festival for April 2023 and wishes to invite faculty, staff, and students to participate in the programming.

One way to participate is for faculty or staff to host an event, by yourself or with other faculty or staff. In the past, for example, faculty and staff have demonstrated techniques such as printmaking, hosted panels on various topics such as comic book artists, demonstrated how to enact combat scenes for dramatic productions, performed on various musical instruments, and exhibited their own art in one of the NSCC libraries. If you would like to discuss possible ideas, please email Cari Keebaugh (ckeebaug@northshore.edu).  Presentations may be on campus or virtual though we are eager to offer more on campus events this year.

Another way to participate is to create an assignment in one of your spring courses that offers students the opportunity to write or perform and to receive credit (or perhaps even extra credit) for their work that would be presented on campus or virtually. For example, students might write poems, create a Tik Tok performance or short video, or create an art work related to course work. The committee is thinking of a variety of ways in which this work would be featured as part of Arts in April, either as an on campus exhibit or a virtual presentation.

If you are interested in participating in either of these ways, please notify Cari Keebaugh (ckeebaug@northshore.edu) at your earliest convenience and no later than the end of January, 2023. Cari needs to know what type of assignment you plan to incorporate into your course by the end of February 2023, but students would not need to submit their work until sometime in March.

Finally, we hope you will support Arts in April by taking your classes to some of the events and/or by making them aware of this festival.

COVID-19 Vaccination Student Accommodation Deadline and Process

While the College and the MA Community College’s strongly prefer that all students, faculty and staff receive their COVID-19 vaccinations (and on-going boosters), we also recognize that some individuals will seek accommodations.

If a student is seeking a reasonable accommodation for the COVID-19 vaccination for Spring 2023, please have them complete the Student Reasonable Accommodation Form by the deadline date of Tuesday, January 3, 2023. The Student Vaccination Review Committee has 10 business days to respond to a completed submission. Therefore, it is crucial that students requesting a reasonable accommodation do so by the posted deadline date to have their application reviewed prior to the start of Spring 2023 classes.

Please note, if a student submits a request for a reasonable accommodation, it’s the College’s intention to provide a reasonable accommodation while upholding the Massachusetts Community College COVID-19 Vaccination Policy. All requests are carefully reviewed, and alternative options such as taking a course on-line or via videoconference may constitute a reasonable accommodation. Requests for accommodations do not guarantee that the student will be approved for the specific accommodation they are seeking. Questions about the process should be directed to the Student Vaccination Review Committee by emailing vax_accommodations@northshore.edu.

If you do not wish to consent, form W-2 will be postmarked in the mail by January 31, and 1095-C in the mail by the end of February.

Welcome to the
Equality & Equity Project

As part of our commitment to Anti-Racism, Diversity & Inclusion, the Equality & Equity Project will provide historical and present-day information about the contributions, challenges, culture, and daily lives of the many vital groups that make up our NSCC community, and the larger world.

We invite you to visit often, reflect on what you see and read, discuss it with others and, hopefully, expand your knowledge base, appreciation, and understanding of groups beyond your own.

December Deep Dive
Why is it so hard for women to talk about money? Open up social media, and you’ll see people sharing intimate details of their lives – things they might not even discuss with their closest friends or family – with virtual strangers. But when the conversation shifts to finances, women often clam up, keeping the specifics of their wages private. Even as discussions about equal pay become more common in society, many women still hesitate to talk to each other about their bottom lines. So, what happens when women talk openly and honestly about money? Watch this video from NBCLX News.

Think about this:

This is an example of Christian privilege: A bumper sticker supporting your religion won’t likely lead to your car being vandalized.
