Welcome to the
Equality & Equity Project

As part of our commitment to Anti-Racism, Diversity & Inclusion, the Equality & Equity Project will provide historical and present-day information about the contributions, challenges, culture, and daily lives of the many vital groups that make up our NSCC community, and the larger world.

We invite you to visit often, reflect on what you see and read, discuss it with others and, hopefully, expand your knowledge base, appreciation, and understanding of groups beyond your own.

Think About This...

Microaggressions are the everyday verbal, nonverbal, and environmental slights, snubs, or insults, whether intentional or unintentional, which communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative messages to target persons based solely upon their marginalized group membership.  For instance:

  • Complimenting a person born and raised in the United States on their English simply because they are not white.
  • Using outdated and offensive terminology, such as, “That’s so gay.”
  • Underrepresenting different races, sexualities, and disabilities in the media.
  • Telling a thin person that they should eat more food.
  • Asking someone, "Where are you REALLY from?

If you have any questions or comments on NSCC's Equality & Equity Project, please contact us at EqualityEquity@northshore. edu

beyond the blue graphicBeyond the Blues

Enjoy retired Professor Ralph Tufo’s new musical, Beyond the Blues, a play about the power of music.

You can also access the video by going to YouTube and typing “Beyond the Blues Zoom Production” in the search box.

Ralph wrote the script, lyrics, and music. Samantha Bestvina was the producer/director, and Larry Plitt of the Squeezebox Stompers performed the music. Feel free to share this email.

Synopsis - It’s 1982 in the Brickyard neighborhood of Lynn, MA. The gritty Urban Legend Bar & Grill is hosting its annual Singer/Songwriter Blues Competition. Four finalists are vying for the coveted award. They each sing 2 original songs accompanied by dramatic monologues which describe their song inspirations, the hardships they’ve gotten beyond, and their own unique connection to Lynn’s history. The owner of the Urban Legend is struggling to keep the bar operating since the Brickyard neighborhood has been decimated by urban renewal and a loan-shark is now threatening him for payback.   The Blue Blazers Band (Squeezebox Stompers) provide the live musical back-up for the singers. What happens to the bar?  Who wins the award at the end? It’s up to the actual audience who votes for the winner at each performance.

Pop some popcorn, sit back, relax and enjoy the show.
