PTA Department Receives $25,000 Donation
NSCC’s Physical Therapist Assistant department and the NSCC Foundation hosted a reception last week to thank Scott Hoffman for his generous $25,000 donation to support the PTA program. Scott suffered a seriously debilitating stroke in 2000 which left his entire left side nonfunctioning. He spent a month at Mass General Hospital and 3 weeks at Spaulding Rehabilitation before going to Whittier Rehab in Haverhill for outpatient PT where he met his physical therapist Dr. Mary Meng-Lee.
Scott told the PTA students, faculty and special guests who attended that through working with Mary three times a week he really got to know her and realized the impact of PT on regaining his overall strength. Scott had been told by his Boston doctors that he might never walk again. “Mary is an incredible therapist. She is attentive and caring and because of her care I was able to get my life and dreams back.”
Scott told the PTA students “This is a very important profession. You literally have people’s lives in your hands. You change people’s lives.” He noted that this is why he chose to donate to the program so that purchases can be made to continue to support student learning. “I am so happy with the overall success of the students and the program. I want to help ensure that it keeps going.”
Although Scott now lives in Florida, he has volunteered with the PTA program both as a speaker and serving as a simulated patient in various case studies. He has regained his professional photographer profession and does a lot of shooting on Miami Beach, easily navigating the rough sand.
President Gentile thanked Scott for giving back and for his support of NSCC’s PTA program. His generosity is noted through a plaque dedicated in his name that is currently hanging outside NSCC’s PT lab.
