Set Your Web Browser to Work with Blackboard Learn

Blackboard Learn is functional in various Web browsers on a Windows or Mac OS X system, including: Edge, Firefox, Safari, and Chrome. To properly configure your Web browser follow the steps below.

  1. Identify your Web browser and its version:

    Edge
    • Open the browser.
    • Go to More Actions (ellipsis icon) on the upper-right corner and select Settings.
    • Select About this App.

    Firefox
    • Open the browser.
    • Go to the Help menu and select About Firefox.
      (If you do not see the Help menu, press the Alt key on your keyboard to display the menu bar.)

    Safari
    • Open the browser.
    • Click the word Safari, on the top-left side, and select About Safari.

    Chrome
    • Open the browser.
    • Click on the three stacked lines icon, on the top-right side, and select About Google Chrome.

  2. Check if your Web browser and version are supported by Blackboard Learn. Refer to the Blackboard Web browser documentation.

  3. Web browsers must accept cookies, Java and JavaScript should be enabled (if allowed), and the pop-up blocker disabled.

  4. Consider the following information about Blackboard Learn supported Web browsers.
    • Beta versions or recently released versions of these Web browsers might not be compatible with all functionality in Blackboard Learn and users may experience some issues.
    • These Web browsers are supported by Blackboard Learn for regular computer devices (desktop/laptop/netbook). Please be aware that browsers in netbooks (such as Chromebooks) can provide access to some features in Blackboard Learn but not to all.

  5. Test your browser.
    The Browser Test (also available in the My Home page after login) examines your computer for components that Blackboard Learn needs in order to operate effectively. Make sure it meets system requirements.

  6. Clear your Web browser's cache often.
    For your Web browser to function efficiently, you should clear your Web cache often:

    Edge (20 and higher)
    1. Click the Hub icon (three horizontal lines).
    2. Click the History icon.
    3. Click Clear All History.
    4. Select both Cookies and Saved Website Data and Cached Data and Files.
    5. Click the Clear button.

    Firefox (31 and higher)
    1. Go to the Tools menu and select Options.
      (If you do not see the Tools menu, press the Alt key on your keyboard to display the menu bar.)
    2. Click the Advanced icon on the top panel.
    3. Click the Network tab.
    4. Click the Clear Now button for the Cached Web Content.
    5. Click OK to save changes.

    Safari (6 and higher)
    1. Click the word Safari, on the top-left side, and select Empty Cache.
    2. When prompted for confirmation, click the Empty button.

    Chrome (36 and higher)
    1. Go to the three stacked lines icon, on the top-right side, and select Settings.
    2. Scroll down, and click the Show Advanced Setting link.
    3. Scroll down to the Privacy section, and click the Clear Browsing Data button.
    4. Select the Empty the Cache checkbox or appropriate checkboxes (download/browsing history, cookies, cached images and files, etc.).
    5. Click the Clear Browsing Data button.
