North Shore Community College

Hospitality and Tourism (TGD)
Program Activities

    Professional Meetings
Students participate in monthly meetings of organizations such as the North of Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau. At these meetings students have the opportunity to network with future colleagues and listen to guest speakers. Topics may include how to plan tourism in a down economy, marketing opportunities for your business, and how to sell travelers insurance.

    Service Learning Volunteering Experiences
Students have an opportunity to take part in service learning. Service Learning is a teaching and learning method that connects meaningful community service with academic learning, focusing on critical and reflective thinking, and civic responsibility. Service-Leaning enhances what is taught in college by extending students? learning beyond the classroom and providing opportunities for students to use their emerging and acquired skills and knowledge to meet real needs in the community.

In the Planning Meetings & Special Events course students have volunteered at Lynn Arts Asssociation in Lynn, The National Park Service in Salem, and Girls Lynn Inc. in Lynn.

    Industry Field Trips
In classes such as Hotel Operations and Tour Management students may tour the front and back of hotels to do what the industry calls "site inspections" or students may take a walking tour of a particular city to understand its tourism development.
