Workforce Development Initiatives

North Shore Community College provides workforce development training and education in a broad array of programs designed in collaboration with regional business and industry for adults, English-Language learners, career changers, and career seekers.

Breaking Through Initiative (BTI)

Easy-to-navigate career pathways for low skill adults to achieve family sustaining wages and college credentials. Existing pathways developed for: Child Development Associate to Early Childhood careers and Certified Nursing Assistant to Allied Health careers; being expanded through Project Grad. Funding from: MDOE Community Partnerships, Eastern Bank Foundation, Verizon Foundation, ARRA funding through NSWIB.

Building Careers

College level coursework for early childhood professionals who are seeking degrees in Early Childhood Education or related fields. Funding from MA Department of Early Education & Care (NSCC the regional lead).

Department of Labor TAACCT

Community College Career Training grant based on best practices of the Breaking Through Initiative (BTI). Accelerated learning models include contextualized curriculum, networked case management, stackable certificates, and educational pathways. NSCC's model will focus on Math Re-design, program development in health and Advanced Manufacturing, and career mapping. Funding from DOL through Massachusetts Community College Consortium.

Energy Utility Technology Program

Training for college certificate and AS degree in EUT to prepare field-force for jobs in energy delivery. Funding from DOL Community Based Job Training grant in collaboration with Middlesex CC (lead entity) and Quinsigamond CC.

Energy Efficiency Training

Training for industry/state certification in energy efficiency using the Building Performance Institute model; NSCC is the northeast regional lead in MassGREEN, community college statewide training network led by Springfield Tech CC. Funding from ARRA through NSWIB (lead entity) for BPI Building Analyst and Envelope Specialist.


Partnership with North Shore Labor Council in skills training and college access for participants entering manufacturing/machinist jobs. Funding from DOL through North Shore Labor Council and NSWIB.

Financial Services

Preparation for entry level works in the financial services sector. Funding from MA Workforce Competitiveness Training Fund in collaboration with NSWIB and Operation Bootstrap in Lynn.

Hospitality & Tourism

Basic skills, customer service, and industry-specific training to new and incumbent workers in MA priority sector. Funding from MA Workforce Competitiveness Training Fund in collaboration with Northern Essex CC and Middlesex CC.

LPN Alliance

Training for incumbent certified nurse assistants to earn LPN degrees. Funding from employer collaboration of area long- term care providers (LPN Alliance) and MA Workforce Training Fund.

Manufacturing Technology

Basic skills, technical math, OJT component for machinists and machine repairers in certificate/degree program in collaboration with General Electric, Magellan Aerospace, and North Shore Workforce Investment Board with regional programs at NSCC, NECC, QCC, and MCC. Funding from North Shore Community College and NSWIB.

Transition to College & Careers

Transition adults to health and human services careers through accelerated academic and advising model. Funding from North Shore Community Action Programs (NSCAP) through Nellie Mae Foundation.

Vision Project Initiative

Development of an academic/career mapping initiative with focus on an Early College model with the Lynn schools, professional development, Career Days, and workforce alignment in key occupational areas. Funding from Massachusetts Department of Higher Education Performance Incentive grant.

Veterans Bridge Program

Combined efforts of North Shore Community College (NSCC), Salem State College (SSC), and the North Shore Workforce Investment Board (NSWIB) to develop and deliver a cohesive set of education and job training services for veterans recently returned from the Afghanistan (OEF) and Iraq (OIF) conflict for a positive transition to civilian life. Funding from USDOE FIPSE Congressional appropriation.
