This class requires significant student participation in the classroom.

Time to plan for the spring and get bulbs into the ground. The payoff will be the stunning beauty of spring tulips, daffodils, snowdrops, and more. This lecture will cover bulb selection, planting techniques, designing with color, naturalizing bulbs, and forcing bulbs for early enjoyment indoors.

A basic how-to for the fall garden. How to get the most out of your garden as the season wanes. What to cut back, what to fertilize, what to bring inside, and when to do it. How to clean up and store tools. How to protect prized plants from winter winds and cold temperatures.

An introduction to the most commonly planted trees in New England, their distinguishing characteristics, horticultural requirements and some suggested landscape uses. Examine botanical features such as: leaf shape; color; twig and bud characteristics. Class meets for seven sessions during six weeks, including one mandatory weekend field trip, to be arranged with the instructor. Plant specimens, slide lectures and the field trip will be used. Two quizzes, a final test and a photo journal are required for successful completion of this course. Textbook required, available at the Danvers campus bookstore.

Study and learn to identify suitable native and exotic plants for the New England area, including their ornamental attributes, uses horticultural requirements, and design implications. No heavy digging, watering, weeding, thinning, or over-flowering harvest. Discussion and illustration of typical construction methods for a variety of landscape structures such as stone walls and steps, arbors and pergolas, fences and gates, decks, pool and foundations, site furniture and paving. Hands-on design/drawing exercises given in class. Drawing experience helpful, not required.

Fall is a great time for harvesting and drying herbs and preserving them for use in cooking, decorating, and gift- making throughout he winter. Learn about growing some basic herbs, and some uncommon ones, and how to use them throughout the seasons.

Old garden roses and many newer hybrids are rewarding and easy to grow using organic methods. Learn the basics of choosing, planting, pruning, and caring for the roses best suited to our northern climate, using earth-friendly methods.

Gain hands-on experience at Long Hill, an outstanding country estate with historic gardens in Beverly owned by the Trustees of Reservations. Participate in fall landscaping and garden maintenance surpervised by the Long Hill staff horticulturalists. Learn about perennial garden maintenance, fall cleanup, winter garden protection, mulching, weeding, lawn care, woody plant culture, spring bulb planting, tool maintenance, and more. Informational handouts provided. Students select two of three mornings (Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday).

Learn about planting, weed identification/removal, garden rejuvenation, summer pruning (including hedges), mulching, propagation by cuttings, stone laying, landscape equipment, design of summer containers, and more. Beginners will achieve confidence in basic drawing skills, and experienced designers will enhance and expand their skills. Emphasis on developing skills required to prepare landscape plans and color renderings. In-class exercises and personal critique given. Significant homework required. You will need a small workspace at home. Required tools and supplies discussed in the first class. A $5 materials fee payable to the instructor at the first class. Continue to develop skills and self-confidence in landscape design graphics. Session II offers additional graphic tools and techniques to prepare professional level plans and drawings. Weekly exercises and homework culminate in a final portfolio project. Individual critique given based on individual talents and skill level.
