Faculty Support
Center for Teaching Learning & Assessment (CTLA)
The CTLA is a faculty resource center that supports the learning & teaching process through:
  • assistance with syllabi, creative assignments and assessments
  • facilitation of the department/program review process
  • encouragement and support for faculty initiatives
  • professional development opportunities
Support is provided by the Director of the CTLA, a full-time Curriculum Resource Specialist, a Service-Learning Coordinator, and an Administrative Assistant.
Service-Learning

Service-Learning, a faculty-initiated program, is a learning and teaching method that connects meaningful community service experiences with academic learning, focusing on critical and reflective thinking, and civic responsibility.

  • more than 50 faculty participants
  • over 60 different Service-Learning courses offered
  • over 12,000 hours of service at more than 300 different community based organizations

The CTLA provides stipends and professional development for faculty who develop a service-learning component in one or more courses. There is also an opportunity for faculty to apply to become a Cummings Fellow to experience community service while providing service to a local community-based organization.

Technology Across the Curriculum (TAC)
TAC Grants are given to faculty and staff to promote academic excellence by stimulating and nurturing innovative ideas that employ technology in support of teaching and learning.
Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC)
This has been a faculty driven initiative for more than twenty years with faculty members receiving a stipend for developing and integrating the WAC writing process into one or more of their courses.

WAC promotes the use of writing to improve student learning across the disciplines and has served as a professional development opportunity for individual faculty as well as an instructional resource for the entire college community.
Professional Development
Incentives for faculty members to attend conferences, workshops, and other professional development activities are provided through the Professional Development Standing Committee, Division Deans, and the CTLA.

In addition:
  • The CTLA and the Liberal Studies Division offer a Professional Development course for faculty which addresses best practices in teaching and learning in hybrid format: online modules combined with two in-service workshops each semester. Open to all faculty.
  • The CTLA facilitates a series of professional development sessions for new faculty covering a variety of topics which assists in making their first year as meaningful as possible and introduces them to the culture here at the College.
  • The College sponsors a Professional Development Day for faculty and staff.
Mentors for Full-Time Faculty
All new full-time employees are paired with a mentor who provides an informal orientation to the NSCC culture and is available as an ongoing source of information and support.
Distance Learning
NSCC is a leader among community colleges in the field of distance learning. Not only do we offer more than 70 online courses and service over 1300 online students each semester, but we also provide top quality pedagogical support to our instructors.

Support is provided through the office of the Director of E-learning which includes two full-time instructional designers and an assistant who partner with faculty to develop distance learning courses that meet the highest standards.
Academic Technology
Academic Technology provides on-going support and professional development opportunities to faculty and staff.

Our work helps NSCC’s community of learners integrate state-of-the-art media and instructional technologies to:
  • help faculty apply new strategies and techniques for teaching
  • create engaging learning environments for students
  • develop meaningful relationships and connections among all members of the College community—faculty, staff, students and affiliated constituents.
