COP202 Cooperative Education/Internships
Job Application Resources
The purpose of the cover letter is to introduce yourself to an organization, demonstrate your interest in the company or a specific internship or job opening, draw attention to your resume and motivate the reader to interview you. This is typically the first contact you have with a company along with sending your resume.
The purpose of a resume is to provide a summary of your skills, abilities and accomplishments. It is a quick advertisement of who you are. It is used to get you an interview.
Preparing yourself for an interview is critical to your success. Legendary basketball coach John Wooden once stated, “Failing to prepare is preparing to fail”. It is helpful to prepare yourself with someone you know well and someone you don't know well. This has two benefits: you will answer questions comfortably with the person you know well and build confidence. Answering questions with someone you do not know well will be more like the actual interview.
Thank You Letter
A thank you letter is necessary if you want to get the job. It shows follow up, follow through and you are giving thanks to the employer for giving you their valuable time. You also want to express your continued interest in being hired. It is also a time to point out anything you feel you missed during the interview. Please send within 2 business days.
If you have questions or need assistance, please contact the Internship Office at firstname.lastname@example.org.
