Selective Service Requirement

Selective Service registration is the way our government keeps a list of names of men from which to draw in case of a national emergency requiring rapid expansion of our Armed Forces. When registering for Selective Service, a man is not joining the U.S. Military.

According to federal law, every male born on or after January 1, 1960 must register with Selective Service within 30 days of his 18th birthday. Selective Service will accept late registrations only until he reaches his 26th birthday.

Exemptions - Students who are automatically exempt from registering for Selective Service include:

  • females
  • males who are in the Armed Services on active duty
  • males who have not reached their 18th birthday
  • males who were born before 1960

If you do not fall into any of these exempt categories, your Student Aid Report will be issued with a Selective Service “flag.”

This means that you must provide written documentation as proof of your registration or exemption status.

NOTE: If a male fails to register between the ages of 18 and 26, he becomes ineligible for all types of Federal and State financial aid, including Work-Study.

Please refer to the Student Financial Aid Handbook for more information regarding Selective Service requirements.
