Student Alternative (Private) Loans

Students are highly encouraged to explore their eligibility for federal and state funding first, before considering private loan options.

Students who are ineligible for federal loans, or who have borrowed the maximum in financial aid for an academic year, may be eligible to utilize alternative student loans. Non-degree students, and students enrolled less than half-time, may also qualify for alternative student loans.

These loan programs are designed to bridge the gap between the cost of your education and traditional sources of financial aid. (These loans are offered through various commercial banks and not the federal government.) These private loans are specifically designed for students attending school on a part-time to full-time basis, including weekend, evening, distance learning, and continuing education programs.

What do these private loans have in common?

  • No financial aid application required
  • Based on credit, current income, U.S. residency qualifications of either the student borrower OR a co-signer
  • Loan programs for noncredit/continuing education courses (less than 6 credits)

In order to utilize a private loan, you would apply directly with your lender of choice. They would notify you of your approval, or if any further documentation is needed. In addition, you must complete with them a Private Education Loan Application Self Certification form, available for download here (http://www.northshore.edu/financial_aid/1011_forms/self_certification.pdf)

This form must be completed by you, and submitted to your lender. You will need to utilize your current financial aid award, and your total cost of attendance at North Shore Community College. You may find this information on your Pipeline account, under the Financial Aid tab.

Once you have been approved for a private loan, your lender will send your loan funds to your account here at North Shore CC, to pay for your tuition and fees.

Below is a list of lenders that offer private loans students commonly use.

You are not limited to these options, and may select a lender of your choice that is not on this list. Please be sure you meet the eligibility requirements for the loan you ultimately apply for, otherwise your loan will be cancelled.
