About Assistive Technology

What is Assistive Technology (AT)?

Assistive technology is defined as “any item, piece of equipment, or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities” (U.S. Congress, 1998)

Assistive technology includes computer hardware, software, and other devices that allow people with disabilities to access computers, the internet, and other information resources.  For example, people with reduced hand dexterity may use a keyboard with large keys, people who are blind may use a screen reader so that they can hear the words that are displayed on computer monitors, or people with learning disabilities may use reading and writing software to improve their academic performance.

Online Resources

EASI (Equal Access to Software and Information)
EASI is a provider of online training on accessible information technology for persons with disabilities reaching more than 4,000 people in over 3 dozen countries since 1993.

LD OnLine
Technology can open doors and break down barriers for children, youth, and adults with disabilities. Whether in the classroom or workplace, assistive technology (including devices, software, recordings, and much more) can increase, maintain, or improve the capabilities of individuals with disabilities. Here we explore new developments in assistive technology.

Web Accessibility Initiative
The Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) develops strategies, guidelines, and resources to help make the Web accessible to people with disabilities. The following WAI resources are intended to provide basic information for people who are new to Web accessibility.

The Assistive Technology Training Project
The Assistive Technology Training Online Project (ATTO) provides information on AT applications that help students with disabilities learn in classroom settings.
