About Assistive TechnologyWhat is Assistive Technology (AT)?Assistive technology is defined as “any item, piece of equipment, or product system that is used to increase, maintain, or improve the functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities” (U.S. Congress, 1998) Assistive technology includes computer hardware, software, and other devices that allow people with disabilities to access computers, the internet, and other information resources. For example, people with reduced hand dexterity may use a keyboard with large keys, people who are blind may use a screen reader so that they can hear the words that are displayed on computer monitors, or people with learning disabilities may use reading and writing software to improve their academic performance.
