English as a Second Language (ESL) Placement Testing

Students must take a placement test in order to determine their level of English. North Shore Community College offers ESL Assessment Testing on the Lynn Campus in the Center for Alternative Studies and Educational Testing Center, Room LE 232. Seating is limited. There is no fee to take this test.

The test will take about 2 – 2.5 hours. This test measures your abilities in the following areas:

  • Listening
  • Grammar
  • Reading
  • Vocabulary
  • Writing

Steps to Enroll in Classes

  1. Make an appointment to take the test
  2. IMPORTANT! You must arrive 15 minutes before the start of the test. Late arrivals will NOT be admitted.
  3. Bring a photo ID. Do not bring valuables to the Testing Center. Please do not bring children to the test.
  4. Results will be ready approximately one week later for you to pick up at the Center in LE-232.
  5. Meet with an Academic Advisor who will help you register for your classes.
  6. Buy your book(s).

The results of your test will be used to place you into the correct level of courses.

ESL Placement Information

North Shore Community College has two kinds of English as a Second Language classes: Credit and Noncredit.

Credit Classes:
These classes are good for people who want to go to college to study more subjects. They provide a more intensive academic-based program of study. If you are interested in credit classes you should apply for Federal Financial Aid to help pay for the cost of the credit courses. Please visit the Student Financial Services Tuition and Cost page for the most current tuition and fees.

Non-Credit Classes:
These classes are good for people who want to improve their English for use in the workplace and in the community. The cost of noncredit courses is $199.00 plus the cost of the book. Financial Aid cannot be used to pay for noncredit classes.
